Fortress of the Bastille

A small fortified mountain and a great place to explore, the Bastille de Grenoble fortress, dating from the 19th century, has been served by one of the first urban cable cars in the world since 1934.

A top regional tourist attraction, the remarkably preserved fort welcomes more than 600,000 visitors each year from all over the world, who make a brief stop, or stay all day.

After the cable car trip, or by taking footpaths, visitors can go to see climbers on the unique via ferrata, explore the “Acrobastille” aerial rope courses, the Contemporary Art Centre, the Museum of Mountain Troops (Musée des Troupes de Montagne), restaurants, snack bar and souvenir shop as well as a panoramic view to take your breath away: mountain scenery stretches to the horizon… Day and night, you can watch the Grenoble conurbation below in complete serenity, from these fortifications which were built there to defend it from invaders coming from Chartreuse.

A full programme of festive, cultural and sporting events make this the favourite playground of Grenoble’s young and older people. Consult the programme on-site.
