History, culture and heritage

Aoste Museum: the museum recounts the town's history in the Gallo-Roman period. It was a prosperous time thanks to its strategic position between Vienna and Italy. The collections show how society was organised, activities for production, religious practices and crafts, particularly ceramics. The site is rich with rich archaeological heritage due to important Gallo-Roman collections.

Morestel or "the painter's city": built on a rocky promontory dominated by a medieval tower, Morestel has attracted many artists since the 19th century. Other attractions include the old fortified town, a keep with orientation table, an exceptional flower display, the town garden designed like a painter's palette, a beautiful heritage circuit and the floral tour.

Brangues or "the writer's city": in the district of Morestel, Brangues is also known as a "village of literature" thanks to two famous writers. Firstly, this is where the "Berthet affair" took place, a real fact that inspired Stendhal's novel "Le Rouge et le Noir". Secondly, Paul Claudel settled here on the banks of the Rhône. His private castle belongs to the Claudel family, but his tomb, in a Japanese garden, is open to visits on French annual heritage days. A Claudel-Stendhal exhibition tells the tale of the relation between the writers and the village.
